Task 1

Which of the following activities on weekends would you like to join? Attending sport events, visiting friends or cooking?

Personally speaking, cooking is definitely a fun activity I’d like to do on weekends. I’ve got two reasons. First of all, cooking has always been a passion of mine. For instance, on weekends when I have more time than weekdays, I like to cook something nicer for my family and I. Last weekend, I roasted a turkey and I stuffed the turkey with an apple, some chestnuts and a lot bacon, just like the kind of turkey you eat on a Thanksgiving, and I served with it cranberry sauce and gravy. It was so much fun for me because on weekdays, I only get to whip up something quick like a tuna sandwich, I dont get to enjoy the process of making food. Plus, cooking on weekends is a great way to share your life with your friends. I myself invite a couple of friends over to my place almost every weekend to try my new dishes, my friends love it and we always have a great time eating fine food, drinking wine and talking.

Task 2

Do you agree or disagree that robots are going to replace human beings to do work in the future?

I agree that one day robots will replace human beings for two reasons. First of all, with the speed of the development of modern technology, there are already quite a few fields where robots play an irreplaceable role. Especially when it comes to dangerous jobs. For instance, years ago miners used to work in a terrible environment where they were constantly surrounded by unpredictable accidents, and many of them suffered from lung diseases caused by long-term exposure to the dust in mines. But nowadays more and more robots are being used to replace the miners and human beings no longer have to suffer from this kind of dangerous working environment. Plus, robots usually have a much higher efficiency than human beings. Take the assembly line invented by Henry Ford in 1913, it was sort of a robot and it significantly improved the production efficiency.

Task 3

The student suggests the university to have a sale for used items due to two reasons. The first reason is that students can save some money buying used goods. And the second reason is that if it’s a chance for students to get rid of some stuff they no longer need. In the conversation, the woman agrees with the suggestion. In the first reason, she mentions that shes always wanted to buy a bike for herself but its too expensive and she can’ t afford it, but if theres a sale of used items, maybe she can find something cheaper there. As for the second reason, she points out that the dorms of students are usually pretty small, it s a good idea to help them get rid of the things they dont need and spare more space in the dorms.

Task 4

In the lecture, the professor talks about the evolution in action which is the process of rapid evolution to adapt to sudden changes. He offers us an example to illustrate it. Mint grass used to grow among woods and wetland, but then American people started building a lot of wooden houses, so mint grass started growing on the grassland close to peoples houses. Then 100 years ago, lawn mowers were invented and people started to cut off the grass on their lawn for their places to look nicer, so mint grass started growing sideways instead of growing vertically. This is how the professor explains the concept of evolution in action.

Task 5

The man’ s problem is that he wants to take child psychology this semester but he hasn’t taken the required introductory courses yet. There are two possible solutions for the man. The first one is to take both of the introductory course and the child psychology this semester. And the second solution is to take the introductory course this semester and the child psychology next semester. If I were in his shoes, I’ d go for the second solution because he would get too stressed if he took both of the courses in one semester and even though he needs to apply for his masters next semester, I’m pretty sure taking one more class wouldn't hurt, after all, he really wants to take this class.

Task 6

In the lecture, the professor talks about two drawbacks of making plans. The first one is when we make a plan that’ s way too detailed. For instance, the professor used to make a very detailed plan including class planning and working out, but after a while he realized he couldn't finish some of the items and it was very frustrating, so in the end, he just gave up the plan altogether. The second one is there might be distractions and we won’ t be able to finish the plan on time. For instance, the professor s colleague asked the professor if he could view a paper for her, at first the professor thought he could do it, but it turned out that in the end he didn't have the time to do it for his colleague.
